Drywood Termites

Drywood termites are a less common but very real threat to homes and structures in North Carolina. Unlike subterranean termites, drywood termites do not require contact with soil and can live entirely inside dry wood—making them especially dangerous when they arrive unnoticed inside furniture, trim, or structural lumber.

While they are traditionally associated with southern coastal states like Florida and California, confirmed cases in North Carolina are increasing, primarily due to human-assisted transport rather than natural spread.

Scientific Classification

  • Order: Blattodea

  • Family: Kalotermitidae

  • Common Species: Incisitermes spp.

Overview

Drywood termites live and nest inside sound, dry wood, including:

  • Furniture

  • Structural framing

  • Door and window trim

  • Hardwood flooring

  • Roof timbers

They do not build mud tubes, do not need moisture from the soil, and often remain hidden for years before damage is discovered.

A key identifying trait is the presence of dry, sand-like fecal pellets (frass) that are pushed out of small kick-out holes in infested wood.

Confirmed Drywood Termite Locations in North Carolina

Although drywood termites are not native to most of North Carolina, D & D Pest Control Co. has personally confirmed and treated active infestations in the following locations:

Kinston

  • Infestation traced to furniture transported from Florida

  • No local colony origin identified

  • Confined drywood infestation within the furniture

  • No evidence of new local spread

  • Highlights the most common pathway: imported items

Emerald Isle

  • Active infestation confirmed in a home off Coast Guard Road

  • Coastal environment increases survival potential

  • Structure was professionally treated using Termidor

  • Infestation successfully addressed

⚠️ These cases confirm that drywood termites are present in North Carolina, primarily through human transport, not natural migration.

How Drywood Termites Get Into North Carolina Homes

Drywood termites almost always arrive through imported materials, including:

  • Furniture from southern states (especially Florida)

  • Reclaimed or antique wood

  • Cabinets, doors, or trim installed from infested sources

  • Boats, RVs, and coastal construction materials

They do not require soil contact, so a single infested item can introduce a colony.

Signs of a Drywood Termite Infestation

  • Small piles of pellet-shaped frass beneath wood

  • Tiny kick-out holes in trim or furniture

  • Hollow-sounding wood

  • Swarmers emerging indoors (often mistaken for flying ants)

  • No mud tubes present

Risks & Structural Damage

Drywood termites slowly but continuously consume wood from the inside out. Over time, this can lead to:

  • Structural weakening of framing

  • Damage to furniture and antiques

  • Expensive repairs if left untreated

  • Spread into multiple wood components within the structure

Because infestations are hidden, damage often goes unnoticed for years.

Treatment & Control Options

Drywood termite control is very different from subterranean termite treatment and requires professional expertise.

Professional Treatments May Include:

  • Localized wood treatments

  • Borate applications

  • Structural insecticide treatments such as Termidor

  • In some cases, fumigation (depending on severity and structure type)

DIY treatments are rarely effective and often allow the infestation to continue spreading unseen.

Prevention Tips for Homeowners

  • Inspect furniture brought in from out-of-state

  • Be cautious with antiques and reclaimed wood

  • Schedule inspections for coastal or rental properties

  • Act quickly if frass or swarmers are observed indoors
